I regularly run out of time in real-time games because the very first decision in the game (what initial cards are to be used) is the hardest. I believe, if possible, about 3x - 5x the normal amount of turn time should be available for making this decision.

Yeah, it's really annoying to be expected to make 14 decisions in the same time span you usually have alloted for one or two.

It's INSANE that choosing 2 corps, 2 preludes and 10 cards is expected to be done in a couple minutes.

This is a simple fix that should have been implemented within a second of suggesting it.

How do you know it's simple? Are you a BGA developer? Time management is probably a central BGA feature that the developers can't mess with as freely as with the implementation of the game.

I think it's great idea for all players, even these more experienced. I have about 50 finished games on bga and still almost every time first choice is made in a hurry. I could play with ease on high speed but it's impossible due to this choice's limited time. It would be great if it will be possible - mandatory or as an option. I suggest about 5mins on it.

Please add this feature request. I'm sure some expert players could suggest how long the first turn length should be, but it definitely needs to be increased. Maybe double or triple the amount of a normal turn.

I cannot make time MORE than total turn time which is set to 3 min or whatever game speed is.
I am adding more time after to compesate for it, but it will only kick in after selection.
3 min should be enought to choose your cards. If not you should play friendly/turn based game.

Would one way to get around the BGA timer limitation be to give a full turn timer to select corporation, then select prelude, then select starting project cards? That way you effectively get a 3x timer for the opener

I like Akaiden's idea.

The turn timer for real-time Terraforming Mars is very short. Even on the slowest setting, it is only 2 minutes and 42 seconds.

Race for The Galaxy has a 5-minute option on the slowest setting, and that's a game that typically only takes 10 minutes TOTAL for a player to make all moves.

Maybe I add button "Give me more time" without a turn - I need to check if this properly will udpate the servers (and figure out how to prevent abuse)

There was a spirited discussion a few months ago about a game analysis in which the OP of the thread had not taken the optimal line with the starting hand. High-level players plan out an opening strategy based on the optimal synergy from among their 2 starting corporations, 4 preludes, and 10 project cards. This takes time. And the advice from top players would be for all players to do this. The given time, even on the slowest setting, does not really provide sufficient thinking time to do this.

I very much like the idea of a button a player can click that says, "please give me extra time", as you suggested. At the start of the game, a player would have one such "time bank", and it would add, let's say, 2 minutes. Or whatever amount is deemed appropriate. And maybe every 25 minutes, one more "time bank'" can be added. Sometimes the doorbell rings, or nature calls, or whatever.

If it is not possible to add time to just one section of the game (in this case, selection of cards). I would suggest to separate it into 3 turns. Choosing of corporation cards, prelude cards then the 10 project cards.

It would still feel rushed for choosing the corporation cards, since you have to go through all cards before making a strategy, however it will overall make it a bit better.

I play on the fastest setting, because normally for each turn there is plenty of time to play. It is only the selection phase that doesn't fit the normal game flow.

I would really love to see the entire BGA site add a time bank feature. It's not a good experience for anyone when someone runs out of time, and sometimes unexpected things happen in life that interrupt a real-time game for a few minutes.

But, based on the fact that I've been (by multiple people) told it's not possible to add extra time to a specific move, such as the opening move, I don't see how a time bank would be possible either.

Oh, I just realized that I already talked about this in my recent post on May 27th in this very thread.

Okay, so, someone create a new, separate suggestion for "Split up the initial choosing of cards into separate turns for corporations, preludes, and project cards."

a few possible problems:

1) Suggestions can be upvoted but not downvoted. 20 upvotes means nothing if there are 40 people who would downvote if they could. Could someone create a poll in the regular discussion forum where people can vote yes or no?

2) This would add some nuisance back and forth at the start of turn-based games with 3+ players. My understanding is that turn-based players already get irritated when such things occur, hence the ongoing debate about taking single cations in TFM.

3) How would this work exactly? We see all 16 cards, but we need to lock in our corporation choice and then pass the action to the next player? And then, our corporation is locked in without any possibility of undo if we decide we'd rather go in the other direction? When I play preludes, I often change my mind numerous times during the initial card selection process (with regard to my corporation, preludes, and project cards.) The eventual selection is a synergistic choice, not, "Okay, I want Ecoline. CONFIRM. Okay, now let me see which preludes go well with Ecoline. CONFIRM. Okay, now let me see which project cards go well with these preludes. That's not how people typically make their initial selections.
