I like this suggestion too. An alternate solution could be to have something that keeps a count of a player's current spirit symbols for each color.
This suggestion could also be implemented as a beginner mode or an option that could be selected to turn on and off in the same menu as the tooltips.
Any improvement that helps beginners get the hang of the game seems likely to help the popularity of the game once it's ready for beta.
